The Passive Voice

The simple present passive

Letters are delivered by a postman. (passive)
subject be + past participle

A postman delivers letters (active)
object

As seen above, the passive form of a simple present tense is formed with to be (is,am or are) + past participle. Pay attention that the object of the active sentence is used as a subject in the passive sentence.

Notice : Transitive verbs can be made passive, but become, fit, have, hold, lack, let, love, resemble and suit etc. cant made passive.

Exercise ı. Make sentences in the simple present tense passive, using the words given.

The Simple Past Passive

This castle was constructed three centuries ago ( passive)

As seen above, we use were or was + past participle to form the simple past passive.
